February: It’s Time to Turn Over a New Leaf!

February landscape tips

February is the perfect time to get ahead of spring in Northeast Florida. While our winters are generally mild, early 2026 gave us a real cold snap causing lots of frost/freeze damage. Here are some tips: wait til end of February/early March to see if new growth is emerging and then if there are signs of life and if it looks like the cold weather is over, then and only then, give your plants a good trim and fertilization and they should flush back out. But if you see no signs of buds/branching, you can try the stem scratch test to see if you see any green. If it just snaps and there is no green, then you will need to replace. In the meantime, leave the current frost damaged material on the plants to act as a cover so that in case there is another freeze, the new tender shoots will be protected. Follow us on Pilcher Landscape Instagram to see our most recent videos of how to take care of that cold damage.

💡 Pro Tip: Schedule your spring landscape refresh now to ensure prime availability before the busy season hits!

Pilcher Pest Prevention

Don’t Bug Out—Get Ahead of the Pests!

Pest prevention

February — the very best time to get rid of weeds. Knowing that we will be fertilizing your turf in March/April, now is the time to finally get rid of those lingering weeds. Once the weeds are gone, then your fertilized turf can take off growing. Turf grasses in Northeast Florida have runners and they like to tack down to the soil. So with the weeds gone and fresh fertilization, they have the opportunity to expand and take over, giving you a healthy, lush lawn. If you are seeing weeds in your turf, now is the time to contact us and get rid of them. Pro Tip: Since so many of our yards are dormant from the cold weather, you can spot a weed a mile away, they are bright green.

💡 Did You Know? Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a bottle cap of standing water. Check your property after February rains!

Pilcher Irrigation

Make Every Drop Count—Spring into Savings!

Irrigation system

February is the ideal month for an irrigation system tune-up in our region. Before the dry season kicks in and water restrictions tighten, have your system inspected for winter damage, clogged heads, and timer issues. Many homeowners don’t realize their sprinklers are watering sidewalks instead of grass or that large tree roots have cracked underground pipes until they get a high water bill. A well-maintained system can save you hundreds of dollars in water costs and keep your landscape healthy without waste.

💡 Smart Tip: Consider upgrading to a smart irrigation controller that you can control with an app and is also communicating with a rain sensor.

Pilcher Landscape Lighting

Brighten Up Your Nights—It’s a Brilliant Idea!

Landscape lighting

With sunset still happening around 6:15 PM in February, extending your outdoor living hours with landscape lighting makes more sense than ever. There’s something magical about enjoying your outdoor space on a cool February evening with strategically placed lights highlighting your favorite trees, walkways, and architectural features. Landscape lighting isn’t just about beauty — it’s about safety and security too. Well-lit pathways prevent trips and falls, while illuminated entry points deter unwanted visitors. Plus, with LED technology, these systems are incredibly energy-efficient, costing just pennies per night to operate while adding significant value and curb appeal to your property.

💡 Smart Tip: Evening Elegance: Transform your property into a nighttime showcase — perfect for those February dinner parties on the patio!
